Together, we explore how this teaching has been preached, and then return to the Bible itself to ask whether the text truly supports it. We look at Jesus’ warnings about Gehenna, the meaning of words like olam and aion, and how much of the imagery of fire, worms, and torment is figurative rather than literal.

Along the way, I share my own journey of questioning this doctrine, as well as conversations with respected leaders who admitted that the case for eternal torment is far less solid than tradition suggests. We also reflect on what happens when we confuse God with a destroyer, and how this has shaped cultures of fear, judgment, and even violence.

This module is an invitation to step back from the heaven-versus-hell binary and to hear Jesus’ teaching on the Kingdom of Heaven with fresh ears — as a vision that is expansive, hopeful, and far more life-giving than fear.
